Orchard progress as reported through our Q1 2026 community update.
Food is freedom. At Veritas Village Coronado, a food forest of more than 25 varieties has been growing since the rainy season of 2024, and it is now bearing fruit. Every harvest is a little less to buy at the store and a little more independence.
A Timeline in Trees
- Late summer 2024: Planting began as the rainy season arrived. The chosen area turned out to have up to 6 feet of topsoil, a pleasant surprise.
- October 2024: About 60% of the food forest was planted, and the trees were taking root and settling in.
- April 2025: Much of the orchard stood over six feet tall and was producing its first limes, bananas and sugar cane.
- Early 2026: The orchard trees kept growing and producing an abundance of fruit, with mango season just ahead.
What is Growing
- Tropical fruit: Ataulfo (Mexican) and Indian mangos, avocado, mamey sapote, lucuma, níspero zapota, soursop, chirimoya, guava, nance, jabuticaba, tropical apricot, star fruit, Malay apple, water apple, coconut, dragon fruit
- Citrus: Persian and Peruvian lemon, orange and mandarin
- Everyday staples: banana, plantain, Hawaiian papaya, yuca and sugar cane
- And more: coffee, cinnamon and guaba (Inga edulis)
More Mangos Than We Can Eat
Dozens of massive mango trees stand across the property, not only in the orchard. There will be more mangos than the community can eat, so we are getting ready for plenty of mango jam and maybe even a little mango cider.
Why it Matters
A food forest is a step toward self-reliance: fresh food grown right where you live, with less dependence on supply chains and grocery bills. It is part of what makes a Veritas Village a place to live more independently.
